Governor Seeks Clarification from Vijay Over Majority Support for Government Formation in Tamil Nadu

Reports suggest that several important questions were raised to Vijay during his meeting with Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar regarding the formation of the next government in the state.

Although Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2026, the party has fallen short of the required 118-seat majority needed to form the government independently.

Following support from the Indian National Congress, which won five seats as part of the DMK alliance, TVK still requires the support of six more MLAs to secure a majority. TVK is currently engaged in discussions with parties such as Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Communist Party of India (CPI), and Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M).

As the single largest party, Vijay met the Governor in person and staked claim to form the government. However, since no official invitation had reportedly been extended by Wednesday morning, Vijay met the Governor once again for further discussions.

According to sources, the Governor’s office requested a list of 118 supporting MLAs required to prove majority support. TVK reportedly responded by stating that it would demonstrate its majority on the floor of the Assembly after forming the government.

Reports further indicate that Vijay and senior TVK leaders provided explanations to the Governor regarding the party’s support calculations and assured him that they would successfully prove their majority in the Assembly.

After spending nearly an hour inside the Raj Bhavan, Vijay and TVK officials left the Governor’s residence following the meeting.

It remains unclear whether the obstacles preventing Vijay from becoming Chief Minister have been resolved. Political observers believe that if the Governor is satisfied with the explanations and assurances provided by TVK, an official invitation to form the government could be issued within the next few hours.
