Heavy Rain Alert in Tamil Nadu Till May 2; Fishermen Warned of Strong Winds in Bay of Bengal
IMD issues heavy rain alert for Tamil Nadu till May 2 with thunderstorms and strong winds. Fishermen advised not to venture into the Bay of Bengal due to rough conditions.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall alert for several districts in Tamil Nadu from April 30 to May 2, due to the presence of a trough extending from south interior Karnataka to the Gulf of Mannar across the state.
Rainfall Forecast
On April 30, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40–50 km/h) is expected at isolated places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
Heavy rainfall is likely in the following districts:
- Nilgiris
- Coimbatore
- Tiruppur
- Theni
- Erode
- Salem
- Namakkal
- Dharmapuri
- Krishnagiri
- Tiruchirappalli
On May 1, heavy rain is expected in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, and Erode districts.
On May 2, heavy rainfall may occur in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivaganga, and Virudhunagar districts.
Temperature and Humidity
Between April 30 and May 4, maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are likely to remain 2–3°C above normal. High humidity combined with elevated temperatures may cause discomfort, especially in coastal regions.
Chennai Weather
In Chennai, the sky will remain partly cloudy today (April 30).
- Maximum Temperature: 39–40°C
- Minimum Temperature: 29–30°C
Fishermen Warning
Strong winds are expected over the Bay of Bengal from April 30 to May 4. Wind speeds may range between 45–55 km/h, gusting up to 65 km/h over the north Andhra coast and adjoining central-west Bay of Bengal.
Fishermen are strongly advised not to venture into these areas during this period.
