Coimbatore Book Club Review of Arivai by Inba Vignesh Highlights Women’s Strength and Social Realities
A thought-provoking book club session reviewed Arivai by Inba Vignesh, focusing on women’s empowerment, societal challenges, and modern relationship dynamics through engaging discussions and expert insights.
The April 2026 meeting of Coimbatore Book club began with a warm welcome from the President, Mr Thyagarajan. He then invited Dr. Shashaikala to review Arivai by Inba Vignesh. A respected literary enthusiast, writer, and mentor, Dr. Shashikala delivered a deeply engaging review that explored the emotional and social layers of the novel.
As per her reflections, the book portrays the struggles faced by young brides within family structures, portraying emotional conflicts and societal pressures. Dr. Shashkala highlighted how the protagonist evolves into a strong and independent individual, ultimately choosing to walk away from an oppressive relationship with clarity and conviction. Her journey represents courage, self-respect, and determination to build a new life.
The narrative then follows the challenges of a young woman navigating life independently. Despite societal judgment, criticism, and emotional hardships, she emerges victorious through resilience and mental strength. The story powerfully represents themes of self-identity, independence, and perseverance.

The open discussion session added depth to the event. Dr. Peeyush shared his personal stance of not interfering in matters of marriage, emphasizing individual choice. Vice President Mrs Kalaivani addressed serious societal issues, including extreme consequences faced by young individuals in the name of family honour. Mrs. Padma delivered an emotional perspective on gender inequality, discussing how women often face suppression in their aspirations, thoughts, and opportunities. She highlighted the need for equal recognition and empowerment in all aspects of life.The President expressed concern over changing societal trends, particularly the declining importance of family values such as commitment, patience, and shared responsibility among the younger generation.
The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Dr. Ronald Hadrian who appreciated the active participation and meaningful contributions of all members. The President announced that the next meeting will be held in June, as May will be a vacation period, and encouraged members to continue contributing ideas for the growth of the club.
