Trump Renames Strait of Hormuz in AI Map, Sparks Global Criticism
US President Donald Trump shared an AI-generated map renaming the Strait of Hormuz as “Trump Strait,” drawing criticism amid ongoing US-Iran tensions.
Amid escalating tensions between Iran and United States, former US President Donald Trump has sparked controversy by sharing an AI-generated map that renames the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz as the “Trump Strait.”
The move comes in the backdrop of ongoing military confrontations involving US and Israeli forces and retaliatory actions by Iran targeting key infrastructure in the Gulf region. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy corridor, had earlier been closed by Iran, disrupting international oil shipments.
Following failed peace talks reportedly mediated by Pakistan, the US Navy has continued its blockade around Iranian ports and the surrounding maritime region, further intensifying geopolitical tensions.
Trump had previously referred to the waterway as “Trump Strait” during a media interaction. Reinforcing that stance, he posted an AI-created map on April 29 across his social media platforms, portraying the renamed strait.
The post has drawn widespread criticism from various quarters, with many viewing it as an attempt to assert symbolic dominance over an internationally recognized maritime route. Critics have also pointed out Trump’s growing use of AI-generated visuals to amplify political messaging and personal branding in global affairs.
The development adds another layer of complexity to an already volatile geopolitical situation, with implications for global trade, energy supply chains, and diplomatic relations.
