Amid the tense political atmosphere in Tamil Nadu following the Assembly Election 2026, central intelligence agencies have reportedly issued a warning to the Tamil Nadu Police to strengthen security arrangements across key locations in the state.
Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 seats in the recently concluded election. However, the party has fallen short of the required 118-seat majority needed to independently form the government.
As no political party has secured an outright majority, TVK has intensified efforts to establish a coalition government. With no independent candidates available for support, Vijay is reportedly looking toward alliance parties associated with Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) for possible backing.
Political observers have compared the current situation to the political transitions witnessed in 1967 and 1977, when DMK and AIADMK rose to power. For the first time in Tamil Nadu’s political history, the state is now facing the possibility of a hung assembly where no single party holds a clear majority.
Meanwhile, Vijay had already written to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar seeking an invitation to form the government. During his meeting with the Governor on Wednesday, Vijay was reportedly informed that he must demonstrate confirmed support from a majority of MLAs before staking claim to form the government.
This has created uncertainty over Vijay assuming office as Chief Minister. TVK had been expecting support from parties such as Communist Party of India (CPI), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and PMK. However, with support from these parties still unclear, the formation of a TVK-led government remains uncertain.
Against this backdrop, intelligence agencies have reportedly warned of possible law-and-order issues in Tamil Nadu if the political situation continues unresolved. As a precautionary measure, Tamil Nadu Police has been advised to increase security at important locations across the state.
The coming days are expected to be crucial in determining whether TVK can gather the required support to form the next government in Tamil Nadu.
