Vijay Returns Without Meeting Governor Amid Dramatic Government Formation Developments in Tamil Nadu

Vijay, leader of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), reportedly returned home midway after leaving to meet Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to stake claim for forming the government.

According to reports, Vijay was not granted an appointment to meet the Governor. Sources also claimed that Vijay had left for Raj Bhavan without formally obtaining a scheduled appointment. As a result, he returned home without meeting the Governor.

Earlier, Vijay had already met Governor Arlekar three times requesting an invitation to form the government. In the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2026, TVK emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 seats, although the party did not secure an outright majority on its own.

To form the government, TVK subsequently sought support from parties including the Indian National Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and communist parties.

Congress was the first party to officially break away from the DMK alliance and extend support to TVK. Following this, both communist parties announced unconditional support to TVK on Friday, May 8.

Meanwhile, VCK, which had earlier stated that it would announce its position later, has now officially declared unconditional support to TVK. In addition, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has also joined the alliance.

Reports state that two IUML MLAs submitted signed support letters to senior leader Sengottaiyan. With these developments, TVK’s support strength has reportedly increased to 120 MLAs.

Since 118 seats are required for a majority, TVK now appears to have crossed the majority mark, significantly reducing the uncertainty surrounding Vijay’s path to becoming Chief Minister.

Political observers now expect fresh developments regarding the Governor’s decision on inviting TVK to form the government in Tamil Nadu.
