The Chennai Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rainfall in Chennai and 21 districts of Tamil Nadu over the next three hours, with heavy rain alerts issued for several southern districts.

The Chennai Meteorological Department has announced that light to moderate rainfall is likely in Chennai and 21 districts of Tamil Nadu over the next three hours.

According to the latest weather update issued by the department, rainfall is expected until 4 PM in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, Kanniyakumari, and Tenkasi districts, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal regions.

The weather department stated that the current conditions are being influenced by a trough extending from the Kumari Sea to southwest Madhya Pradesh through Vidarbha, Marathwada, Interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema, and Tamil Nadu.

In addition, an atmospheric circulation is prevailing over the Kumari Sea region at an altitude of around 1.5 km above sea level.

Due to these weather systems, several parts of south Tamil Nadu are expected to receive widespread rainfall today (May 8), while isolated places in north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal may also experience thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rain.

The Meteorological Department has also warned that isolated heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds with speeds of 40 to 50 kmph is likely in districts including Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Madurai, Theni, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, and Karaikal.

Residents in the affected districts have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and strong winds.
