Vijay Breaks MGR’s Record as TVK Surpasses Historic Vote Share in Tamil Nadu Election 2026
TVK leader Vijay surpasses MGR’s historic vote share record in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Election, securing 34.89% votes and leading in 107 seats.
In a historic political development, Vijay, leader of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has surpassed the long-standing electoral record set by former Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran.
In the 1977 Tamil Nadu Assembly Election, MGR’s party, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), secured 33.52% of the vote share in its debut election, which remained a historic benchmark for decades.
However, in the 2026 Assembly Election, TVK has achieved a higher vote share of 34.89% (as of 6:30 PM counting trends). The party has received approximately 16.2 million votes (1 crore 62 lakh votes) so far, thereby breaking MGR’s record and marking a major milestone in Tamil Nadu’s political history.
According to the latest trends, TVK is leading in 107 constituencies, while Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is ahead in 73 seats and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in 54 seats. A total of 117 seats are required to form the government.
Notably, this is TVK’s first-ever election, and the party is already in a strong position to form the government, which is a remarkable achievement.
TVK has recorded a massive historic victory, with Vijay securing landslide wins in both Perambur and Trichy East constituencies.
This performance signals a major political shift in Tamil Nadu, with a new force emerging strongly against established parties.
