59th Engineers’ Day Celebrated in Coimbatore with Awards and Project Expos

The 59^th Engineers’ Day was celebrated in a grand manner by The Institution of Engineers (India), Coimbatore Local Centre on 15^th September 2026 at PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore. Engineers’ Day is an occasion to recognize the profound impact engineers have on technological advancement, infrastructure development and the overall quality of life. It provides a meaningful opportunity to honor the vital contributions engineers make to society. The Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI) observes Engineers’ Day on the birth anniversary of Sir M Visvesvaraya, one of India’s most distinguished engineers and statesmen.

The Chairman of IEI Coimbatore Local Centre, Er M Senthilkumar, welcomed the chief guest and the gathering. He highlighted the significant contributions of IEI in promoting engineering excellence and supporting technological advancements. The Chief Guest, Er R Ragavan, Chief Executive Officer, Oriental Plants & Equipment Private Limited, Coimbatore along with the past chairmen garlanded the portrait of Sir M Visvesvaraya.

Er R Ragavan, the chief guest, addressed the gathering on the theme “Engineering Excellence for a Sustainable and Technologically Sovereign India”. He highlighted the importance of engineering excellence, sustainable development and technological innovation in shaping India’s future. He emphasized the need for engineers to adopt emerging technologies and develop innovative solutions to address societal and industrial challenges. He also stressed the importance of technological self-reliance and responsible engineering practices for achieving sustainable growth. The session encouraged participants to contribute to nation-building through innovation, technical competence, and a commitment to sustainable development. He further highlighted the importance of continuous learning and skill development to keep pace with rapid technological advancements. He encouraged young engineers to take an active role in creating innovative and sustainable solutions for the future.

In the event, three Outstanding Engineer Awards were presented to Er B Anand, Professor and Head, Department of Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Hindusthan College of Engineering and Technology Coimbatore; Er S Kanthalakshmi, Professor, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore; Er J Kanchana, Director - Global Engagement, PSG Institute of Advanced Studies, Coimbatore for their remarkable contributions and achievements in their respective engineering divisions.

Seven Young Achiever Awards were presented to Er S Syed Imran, Senior Scientist, ICAR - Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering - Regional Station, Coimbatore; Er G Jeevarathinam, Professor and Head, Department of Food Technology, Hindusthan College of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore; Er M Prabhavathy, Associate Professor, Department of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore; Er S Bharani, Assistant Professor II, Department of Civil Engineering, KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore; Er S Praveen Kumar, Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore; Er R Naveen Anthuvan, Assistant Professor (Senior Grade), Department of Production Engineering, PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore; Er B Pranesh, Assistant Professor (Selection Grade), Department of Mechanical Engineering, Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College, Coimbatore for appreciating their progress in their respective engineering divisions.

The IEI Distinguished Institution Coordinator Award 2026 was presented to Er V T Gopinathan, Professor and Head, Department of Aeronautical Engineering, Hindusthan College of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore.

Seven Students’ Awards were presented to students from various engineering colleges in recognition of their outstanding achievements. The Dr G R Damodaran Memorial Award is presented to Mr S Rajendran, Final Year B.Tech., Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore; The Cav Dr GKD Memorial Award is presented to Mr S Vishnuvardhan, Final Year B.E., Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology, Pollachi; The Shri Sengoda Gounder Memorial Award is presented to Mr S Veerasanjaykumar, Final Year B.E., Electronics and Communication Engineering, Hindusthan College of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore; The Thiru S V Subramaniam Memorial Award is presented to Ms Varshaa Mani Venkatesh, Final Year B.Tech., Information Technology, Kumaraguru College of Technology, Coimbatore; The Coimbatore Institute of Technology Endowment Award is presented to Ms M B Nharguna Nangai, Final Year B.E., Production Engineering, PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore. The Mrs. Vijayalakshmi Memorial Award is presented to Ms E Amulyaa Shri, Final Year B.Tech., Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Engineering College & Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. The Hindusthan Young Achiever Award is presented to Ms N Sofia, Final Year B.Tech., Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Akshaya College of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore. These awards were conferred in appreciation of the students progress in academic performance, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, sports and games and social service initiatives.

As part of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of The Institution of Engineers (India), Coimbatore Local Centre, marking 60 glorious years from 1965 to 2025, the Centre organized three mega Project Expos in the domains of Civil, Computer Science, and Mechanical Engineering, providing students with a platform to showcase their innovation, technical skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.

The First Project Expo 2026, on the theme “Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Digital Era”, was organized in association with Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore. The Project Expo provided an excellent platform for engineering students to showcase innovative ideas and practical solutions based on emerging technologies. Nearly 120 projects were exhibited, with around 500 participants from various institutions across Tamil Nadu taking part in the event. The projects were evaluated based on performance, innovation, technical excellence, practical applicability, and problem-solving approach. The First Prize was awarded to Mr Vishal M, Mr Thumilesh R, Mr Sanjeevkumar A, and Mr Shanjay V, Second Year B.E. students of Mechatronics Engineering, Kongu Engineering College, Perundurai, for their project titled “AI and IoT-Based Predictive Maintenance System for CNC Machines”; The Second Prize was awarded to Mr Kamalesh M, Mr Vasudevan T S, Mr Krithik Prabhu V S, and Mr Priya Rahul S, Third Year B.E. students of Mechanical Engineering, SRM Madurai College for Engineering and Technology, Sivagangai, for their project titled “Agrixplorer”; The Third Prize was awarded to Mr Nithinprabu V, Mr Naveenkumar S, and Mr Sakthi Prasanth S, Third Year B.E. students of Computer Science and Engineering, Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore, for their project titled “Vision Gate – AI-Powered Multi-Factor Attendance and Presence Verification”.

The Second Project Expo 2026, in the form of Building Design Hackathon 2026, was organized on the theme “Building Design Excellence: Integrated Planning, Quantity Take-Off and Project Cost Management” in association with Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore. The Hackathon provided students with an opportunity to demonstrate their creativity, technical knowledge, design skills, and problem-solving abilities in the field of building design and project management. Nearly 100 innovative solutions were presented, with around 300 participants from across Tamil Nadu taking part in the Hackathon. The awardees were selected based on their performance, innovation, technical excellence, and overall quality of the solutions presented. The First Prize was awarded to Mr Vijay C, Mr Anjey Kissore V M, Mr Mohamed Simakh A F, and Mr Logeshwaran S, Final Year B.E. students of Civil Engineering, Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore; The Second Prize was awarded to Mr Ramanuja C S and Ms Sowmiya S, Final Year B.Tech. students of Civil Engineering, SASTRA Deemed University, Thanjavur; The Third Prize was awarded to Mr Ragesh Kumar G, Mr Rohith Kannan R, Mr Vetrivel M, and Mr Sugadev T, Final Year B.E. students of Civil Engineering, Kumaraguru College of Technology, Coimbatore.

The third Project Expo 2026, on the theme “Sustainable Development in Industry 4.0 & 5.0”, was organized in association with Hindusthan College of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore. The Project Expo focused on encouraging students to develop innovative solutions integrating emerging technologies with sustainable engineering practices. Nearly 130 projects were showcased, with around 600 participants from various institutions across Tamil Nadu taking part in the event. The awardees were selected based on their performance, innovation, technical excellence, and overall quality of the projects presented. The First Prize was awarded to Mr Anburaj S, Mr Chidambaram M, and Mr Sabarish M, Final Year B.E. students of Mechanical Engineering, St. Joseph's Institute of Technology, Chennai, for their project titled “Smart Seed Sowing and Soil & Crop Health Monitoring”; The Second Prize was awarded to Mr. Abishek M, Third Year B.E. student of Automobile Engineering, and Ms. Harini Dharshini Raju, Second Year B.E. student of Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering, Hindusthan College of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore, for their project titled “Borewell Baby Recover System”; The Third Prize was awarded to Mr Nidhish J, Mr Mohamed S, and Mr Gowtham Krishna G, Third Year B.E. students of Computer Science and Engineering, Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College of Engineering, Coimbatore, for their project titled “Lost Found”.

Finally, Er J Pradeep Kumar, Honorary Secretary, proposed the vote of thanks. Nearly 250 participants attended the function, including IEI CLC Past Chairmen, IEI CLC Past Honorary Secretaries, IEI CLC Committee Members, IEI corporate members, faculty and students from PSG College of Technology, PSG Polytechnic College and other institutions, as well as friends and families of the awardees.
