Parimala & Co Review: Jayaram-Urvashi Shine in an Ambitious Comedy Thriller That Loses Its Way

Parimala & Co, directed by Pandiraaj and starring Jayaram, Urvashi, and Mysskin, blends family comedy with crime thriller elements. While the performances and humor work well, an overcrowded narrative and excessive twists dilute the film's impact.

Parimala & Co was promoted well as a dark comedy involving a family. I loved the trailer and the cuts as they were very earthy and reflected a family of four with a lot of funny bones. However the movie gets the comedy better in the dark comedy. The crime associated with the comedy has proved to be a crime. Pandiraj's crime thriller is layered beyond redemption. There are too many characters and too many suspects and after a point you feel tired of the twists.

The performers however do a great task. Urvashi steals the show. Jayaram does justice to the titular character while Myskin is carving a niche as an actor. Ananthika and Sanjana looked comfortable in their roles while Sandy and Santhosh do enough to be in your memory. The intention of the director to convey the impact of drag abuse is appreciated. However that seems hurried and doesn’t add value to the story nor does it help to finish the movie on a high.

Parimala & co is deceptive from the title. Who would have thought it was Jayaram’s name? And what a lovely name for Urvashi and the daughters. Pandiraaj seldom disappoints in naming of his characters. The movie begins with the family and they are lovable and hilarious. It was nice to see the combo of Jayaram and Urvashi after Panchathanthiram and they make acting look easy. Sanjana & Ananthika have to be applauded for matching the seniors.  However the middle class family is unable to stay in middle ground  as they try to balance both innocence of humour and intelligence of crime and sometimes you feel it over theatric.

On the other hand, Myskin shines as an unpredictable police officer but his character gets a very predictable ending, There are many characters and good artists to match them. You feel for the potential in laws, both outlaws, and both Sandy and Santhosh get characters built on sand.

George Williams handles the camera and he does a good job capturing the beach surrounded landscape and the small houses. The music is by debutants Pradeep and Wayne who are named as FOXN Music. They have limited scope but they keep the background running suitably. Wishing them very best.

From Pasanga to Parimala & Co, it has been a journey of 17 years and 12 films for Pandiraaj.
Pandiraj seemingly tries to blend the soul of his previous works Thalaivan Thalaivi & Kathakali. But the blend misses the fun of Thalaivan Thalaivi and the panache of Kathakali.

However it is a harmless watch with some guaranteed laughs.

Parimala & Co has an entertaining family & an unpredictable police officer with a crime thrown in between. It is a fun watch that had so much promise on the way, but gets derailed by way too many characters. It beats me that the director needed so many characters. Maybe he wanted to confuse the audience but he has only made the movie too complex. For example, there was no need for the Nicholas Cage character. Parimala & Co could have done better without the company of at least 10 such characters.

Speaking of too many characters, Poornima’s character was needless. The only credit it could take was providing a cute closure to the Madhumitha – Varghese love portions. In the same vein, I don’t fathom the need to show Varghese forcing himself on Madhumitha. The investigation or rather reveal scene at Jayaram’s house featuring Myskin, Urvashi and the balm was hilarious. I wished Pandiraaj focused on moments like that. Jayaram plays the central character of the movie and I find his role very poorly written who does nothing but to grudgingly endure the chaos.

George Williams does a neat job with the camera while Foxn hasn't much to do with the music. Pradeep's edits could have made up for Pandiraj's lapses. However the editor seems as clueless as the director and the audience. The title card with too many thanks reminded us of Malayalam movies and as seamlessly as art transforms to visuals, you move from thanks to titles. If only Pandiraaj made such an easy transition from comedy to crime, Parimala & Co could have piled up the profits.

I enjoyed the movie Parimala & Co. "Parimala & Co" conveys an important message that the menace of drugs needs to be dealt with an iron hand.  While there are many films that show that drugs have become so easily available, the film shows how it can affect families.

The film starts as a comedy and while Jayaram & Urvashi are effortlessly hilarious, the girls, Yogi Babu & even the gangsters have their moments of fun. I loved the moment when Madhumitha gets offended when she learns that she isn’t Varghese’s only love interest and how the side kick adds a lot of fun with his observations on that scene. There is a lot of fun involving the funny family, the owner – tenant relationship, the friends of the gangster, the inspector and his aides, the family sequence in Palakkad etc and there is a lot of laughter even as we race to find the killer.

The promos and first half promised a lot of fun. But the movie zones out from comedy to whodunit in the second half. I thought the second half and the killer reveal could have been done better. It ends on a serious if not underwhelming note. A good family entertainer nonetheless with a very important message
