Tamil Nadu to Reduce School Bag Weight, Introduce AI Learning and QR-Based Digital Education

Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Rajmohan has announced a series of major education reforms aimed at making learning more engaging, student-friendly, and technology-driven across all schools in the state. Speaking at the Curriculum Development Committee meeting held at the Anna Centenary Library, the minister said the state's education system is entering a new phase with a strong focus on children and their overall well-being.

One of the key initiatives is the reduction of school bag weight for students. The minister stated that lighter school bags will not only reduce the physical burden on children but also help ease their mental stress, creating a healthier learning environment.

As part of the curriculum reforms, mathematics will be taught through storytelling methods to make concepts easier and more enjoyable for students. Textbooks will also undergo significant changes, featuring fewer blocks of text and more colorful illustrations that simplify lessons and improve understanding.

Every lesson in the new textbooks will include QR codes that students can scan to access video-based explanations, enabling a more interactive and digital learning experience both inside and outside the classroom.

The minister also announced that students in government schools will receive training in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies. He emphasized that AI should be viewed as a tool to enhance learning rather than a threat to employment, assuring students and parents that AI will support education instead of replacing human roles.

In addition, the government plans to encourage newspaper reading among students in all schools to improve awareness, reading habits, and critical thinking. Rajmohan also stated that teacher recruitment will continue to be based on merit and that eliminating corruption within the School Education Department remains one of the government's top priorities.

The proposed reforms are expected to modernize Tamil Nadu's education system by combining child-centric teaching methods, digital technology, and practical learning while reducing academic pressure on students.
