Coimbatore’s R. Arjun Thilak Wins Global AI Championship by Google DeepMind and Kaggle
R. Arjun Thilak, an IIT Madras BS learner from Coimbatore, has achieved international recognition by securing first place in a prestigious global Artificial Intelligence (AI) competition jointly organized by Google DeepMind and Kaggle.
Competing against thousands of participants from **192 countries**, Arjun won the **USD 25,000 (approximately ₹24 lakh)** grand prize for developing **'Gauge'**, an innovative AI safety evaluation benchmark designed to improve the reliability and trustworthiness of AI systems.
The 'Gauge' benchmark enables AI models to recognize situations where they are uncertain instead of producing potentially incorrect or misleading responses. In such cases, the system recommends referring the query for **human oversight**, helping reduce AI errors and improving decision-making in critical applications.
Arjun's achievement highlights India's growing presence in the global AI ecosystem and showcases the talent emerging from Coimbatore and IIT Madras. His award-winning innovation represents a significant advancement in AI safety, addressing one of the most important challenges in the development of responsible and trustworthy artificial intelligence.
