Auto Drivers in Coimbatore Welcome Tamil Nadu Government’s Revised Fares
Coimbatore: Auto drivers in Coimbatore have welcomed the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to revise autorickshaw fares after 13 years, citing rising fuel prices, insurance premiums and vehicle maintenance costs. Under the revised fare structure, the minimum fare has been fixed at ₹50 for the first 1.8 kilometres, followed by ₹25 for every additional kilometre. Previously, the minimum fare was ₹25, with ₹12 charged for each subsequent kilometre.
Drivers’ associations say the revision will provide much-needed financial relief and help reduce disputes between drivers and passengers over fares. They have also urged the authorities to ensure proper meter recalibration and effective implementation of the revised rates.
Meanwhile, passengers have stressed the importance of affordable travel and strict enforcement to prevent overcharging. The revised fares are expected to bring changes to autorickshaw services across Tamil Nadu, with the overall impact depending on implementation and compliance with the new rates.
The fare revision highlights the need to balance drivers’ rising operating costs with passengers’ concerns about affordable and transparent public transport.
