Heavy Rain Ravages Kerala: Landslides and Flash Floods Leave Several Dead

Heavy rainfall has triggered landslides, mudslides and flash floods across several parts of Kerala, resulting in multiple deaths and leaving several people missing as rescue operations continue.
In Idukki district, two members of a family were killed after a landslide struck a temporary shed in Kottakamboor near Vattavada. Another person was injured in the incident. In Kottayam district, separate rain-related incidents also resulted in deaths, including a landslip near Teekoy and another incident in the Poonjar area.
Malappuram’s Nilambur region witnessed a sudden flash flood in the Kottapuzha River near the TK Colony area. The sudden rise in the river level swept away several people. Multiple bodies have been recovered, while search operations continue for those still missing. The surge was reportedly linked to heavy rainfall in upstream forest areas, even though there was little or no rain at the location at the time.
Authorities have intensified rescue and relief operations, with police, Fire and Rescue Services, local residents and disaster-response teams involved in the search efforts.
The India Meteorological Department has issued heavy-rain warnings for parts of Kerala, with orange alerts reported for Idukki and Kottayam. Kerala authorities have directed officials to closely monitor the situation and evacuate residents from vulnerable areas wherever necessary.
People living near steep slopes, rivers and other vulnerable locations have been advised to remain alert and move to safer places if instructed by authorities.
