The Central Government has reportedly rejected the Tamil Nadu Government's proposal for the Coimbatore and Madurai Metro Rail projects for the second time, citing population-related eligibility criteria for metro rail systems.
The proposal was initially rejected in November, following which the Tamil Nadu Government revised and resubmitted the project in May. However, the proposal has once again reportedly been turned down.
According to reports, the Centre has stated that Coimbatore and Madurai do not currently meet the required population criteria for the implementation of a metro rail system under the existing guidelines.
The proposed metro projects were expected to significantly improve urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and support the growing transportation needs of both cities. The rejection is likely to delay the implementation of these major infrastructure projects.
The Tamil Nadu Government is yet to announce its next course of action regarding the proposals. Officials are expected to examine the Centre's observations before deciding whether to revise and resubmit the projects or explore alternative urban transport solutions for Coimbatore and Madurai.
