Nooru Saami Review: Sasi Delivers a Thought-Provoking Social Drama Led by Swasika’s Brilliant Performance
Nooru Saami, directed by Sasi and starring Swasika, is an emotionally powerful social drama that explores widowhood, motherhood, and remarriage with sensitivity and depth.

Nooru Saami is a brilliant take on finding a companion for a single mother at her 40s. Through its well set premise and sharp dialogues, the movie poses some difficult questions. During the opening of the movie, the boys hug Selvi because they do not want to go to hostel and towards the end of the movie, the boys hug Selvi because she does not want to go to her new home. Thus life comes a full circle for Selvi as a mother. Sasi somewhat rushes the social response to the change and the climax though cool could have been more convincing. Nice to see some vantage points of our own Coimbatore as the city features prominently in the movie.
Swasika steals the show and carries the movie so easily. Vijay Antony has a brief appearance and is convincing as Ezhumalai. Ajay Dhishan as Baskar and Balaji Sakthivel as Pachaiperumal have maximum screen time and they do justice to their characters. Arul Doss in his cameo did a good job while Lijomol Jose & Munishkanth were wasted in cameos. I expected more screen time to Jenson Diwakar as a side kick. The music by Balaji & the photography by Darshan support the movie very well. Sasi provides another good film that not only entertains but also elevates social thought.

In Nooru Sami, there is a scene where a young widow talks to her family and that of her husband seeking support in raising two kids. There is another scene where the single mother shares her views on re-marriage to a school teacher. There is a scene where a teacher explains to a confused student about humanity. There is a scene where the eldest son explains his U -turn in re-marriage for his mother. There is a scene where a young widow asks an elder one that how motherhood would be possible with a different companion. There is a scene where step father and son discuss how we equate woman to God and forget they are even human. Nooru Saami is a beautiful boquet of such lovely flowers woven together by a screenplay that is sensitive to the trivial subject and sensible in its treatment. Maybe Sasi could have handled the response of Selvi's family in a better manner. Sasi has just done 8 Tamil films in 28 years. If you take his last 3 movies, Pichaikaran, Sivappu Manjal Pachai and now Nooru Saami, he has indeed scored a hattrick of success with soulful movies.
Swasika had one quite a few tamil films before her role as a tough mom in Lubber Pandhu a couple of years ago helped her carve a niche for herself in Tamil Cinema. She had two great movies in Retro and Maaman last year. While many felt she was wasted in Karuppu, she elevates her position in Tamil cinema with her incredible performance as Selvi. She has the maximum screen space and she had to convey a gamut of emotions. Swasika shoulders the movie and seemed at ease doing so. It is a hattrick for Swasika as well if you consider Lubber Pandhu, Maaman and Nooru Saami. Vijay Antony needs a lot of applause not only as a producer but also as an actor. He has portrayed the character with limited screen time in a wonderful manner. His nephew Ajay Dhishan and veterans like Karunas, Balaji Sakthivel etc play their part well. Darshan captures the village beautifully and contrasts it well with the city and as a Coimbatorean, it was nice to have momentary glimpses of our city landmarks. Balaji Sriram's BGM goes well with the movie. The songs Amma Amma Dhaan and Maaya Kanavo are well composed and aptly placed in the move. Harish has done a good job with his edits as he keeps the narration coherent and captivating. Nooru Saami is one of the candidates for the movie of the year.

I loved the title of the movie as it is an instant reminder of the director's earlier work. I liked a song which starts with director Sasi's debut movie. There is a scene (akin to Vaazha 2 Alphonse Puthren Premam moment) where Balaji Sakthivel asks "Don't I know Kaadhal?" (He was the director of the movie Kaadhal). These are small examples that reinforce that director Sasi knows his nuances and also packs them wisely. His usage of black coffee and ceiling fan like a character in the movie deserves appreciation. When the movie opens into a house in debt, abandoned dinner, a woman not answering calls and trying to escape, you feel a sense of terror. When we get to understand the situation, we realise the terror endured by a single woman due to societal error.
Sasi seems to have a flair of finding the best heroines from Kerala to add life to his characters. Like Parvathy in Poo, Lijomol in Sivappu Manjal Pachai, Swasika leaves an indelible mark as Selvi, the Noorusami featured in the movie.
Swasika deserves a lot of accolades and awards for her portrayal of Selvi. She oozes class throughout the movie. Be it her stubbornness with Karunas, the change of minds while sending kids to the hostel, the delicate explanation of her position to Aruldoss, the affection with Vijay Antony, the breakdown before her marriage: she delivers a convincing performance throughout. Vijay Anthony plays short and subtle and ends up being endearing. The camera of Darshan captures the rustic village well in daylight and moonlight. Most importantly he ensures that the mood of the house is reflected visually as well. Balaji Sriram's music adds a lot of value. The songs are easily hummable. Maaya Kanavo is my favourite. The BGM keeps well with the movie. Mohan Rajan and Sasi need another round of applause for some hard hitting dialogues. Actors like Lijomol, Munishkanth, Jenson Diwakar, Bhagavathi are wasted in small roles. Sasi could have toned down a little melodrama near the climax. However none of these affect the experience and impact of this movie. Nooru Saami is one of the best movies of the year.

I watched the movie Nooru Saami. The movie showcases how a single mother raises her two kids well. The movie also questions why a widow with kids shouldn't look at a new relationship. I was surprised and happy that such a progressive idea was based on a real life example. The movie was interesting to watch and also leaves you with a lot of questions. Given the seriousness of the subject, the movie is restrained in comedy, romance and overall entertainment value. Swasika is brilliant as Selvi. Ajay Dilshan as Baskar moves the story forward. However I thought his change in attitude could have been told better. The sub plots like loan issues, family acceptance of re marriage etc were little superficial. In contrast, the relationship between Selvi and Ezhumalai was very nice and I wished director Sasi could have explored more on that. Vijay Anthony as the subtle Ezhumalai is very impressive. The climax is rushed. I think instead of focussing on the social disturbance, there could have been more details on how the family copes with change. There is a scene where the step brother says that the step sister may feel offended and he may speak to her. The relationship of step sister and step mom and that of step brothers and step father could have been done better. However the movie is engaging mostly and ends on the right note. The music director and cinematographer transport you to the village. As a Coimbatore boy, I was happy to see Race Course, Ukkadam, Town Hall and other places on screen even though it was just seconds.
