Coimbatore Airport Expansion Moves Forward with 627 Acres of Land Acquired
Coimbatore International Airport expansion advances with 627 acres acquired, NITI Aayog approval secured and a ₹2,132 crore terminal project awaiting central government approval.

The expansion of Coimbatore International Airport has reached a significant stage, with the land acquisition process for the proposed development nearing completion. A total of 627 acres of land has been acquired for the expansion, of which 621 acres has already been handed over to the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The remaining 6 acres is expected to be handed over soon.
The airport expansion Master Plan has received approval from NITI Aayog and is currently awaiting approval from the central government’s Cabinet Committee on Expenditure. Work related to obtaining the required environmental clearance is also continuing as part of the project process.
As part of the expansion, a new integrated terminal is proposed to be constructed at an estimated cost of around ₹2,132 crore. The proposed terminal will cover approximately 75,000 square metres and is planned to have the capacity to handle around 1.2 crore passengers annually.
Following the expansion, the overall area of Coimbatore International Airport is expected to increase to more than 1,047 acres. Once the project officially begins, the authorities have set a target of completing the expansion works within approximately three years.
The project is expected to significantly increase the airport’s passenger-handling capacity and support the long-term development of aviation infrastructure in Coimbatore.
