New 20-km Highway Proposed to Ease Traffic Congestion in Coimbatore
A new 20-km highway has been proposed from Madukkarai to Selakkarichal in Coimbatore to reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity across the city.
In a major step towards addressing Coimbatore's growing traffic congestion, the Department of Town and Country Planning has proposed the construction of a new 20-kilometre highway connecting Madukkarai on Palakkad Road to Selakkarichal. The proposed corridor is expected to significantly improve traffic flow, reduce travel time, and provide an alternative route for commuters and commercial vehicles.
According to the proposal, the new highway will pass through Madhuvarayampalayam, Chettipalayam, Orattukuppai, Kallipalayam, Parapatti, and S.N. Palayam before reaching Selakkarichal. The project has been designed as a **50-metre-wide road corridor**, creating a direct and efficient transport link between the southern and western parts of Coimbatore.
Officials believe the new road will help decongest existing arterial routes, improve connectivity to developing residential and industrial areas, and support the city's long-term urban expansion. Once implemented, the highway is expected to reduce travel time considerably while easing the increasing volume of traffic in and around Coimbatore, making daily commuting faster and more efficient.
