New 4-Lane Road via Kalapatti to Improve Connectivity to Ooty and Ease Coimbatore Traffic
A new 8.6-km four-lane road from Chitra Junction on Avinashi Road to Mettupalayam via Kalapatti has been proposed to reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity to Ooty.
Travel to Ooty from Coimbatore is expected to become faster and more convenient with the proposed construction of a new 8.6-kilometre four-lane road connecting Chitra Junction on Avinashi Road to Mettupalayam via Kalapatti. The project has been planned by the Highways Department to reduce heavy traffic congestion on the busy Coimbatore–Mettupalayam Road while also helping protect wildlife movement in the region.
The government has allocated ₹27 crore for the key infrastructure project. Once completed, the new road will provide an alternative route for heavy vehicles, allowing them to travel through Kovilpalayam towards Mettupalayam and Ooty without passing through congested stretches of the existing highway.
The project is expected to significantly reduce travel time, improve traffic flow, enhance road safety, and strengthen connectivity between Coimbatore, Mettupalayam, and the popular hill station of Ooty. It is also anticipated to support regional economic growth by improving transportation efficiency for commuters, tourists, and commercial vehicles.
