LPG Subsidy May Be Stopped for Consumers Earning Above Rs. 10 Lakh Annually

Domestic LPG cylinder subsidy benefits, which have so far been provided to households across the country, may soon be discontinued for consumers whose annual income exceeds Rs. 10 lakh, according to reports.

Until now, LPG consumers have regularly received text messages from oil companies regarding cylinder price revisions, booking confirmations, and delivery updates.

However, reports indicate that oil companies have now started sending new verification messages to customers whose annual income is above Rs. 10 lakh. According to the information circulating, consumers who fail to respond to these messages within seven days may have their LPG subsidy benefits discontinued.

Under the LPG subsidy system introduced by the central government, consumers initially pay the full price while purchasing a domestic gas cylinder. The subsidy amount is later credited directly to the customer’s bank account through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.

When the scheme was first implemented, consumers received subsidy amounts worth several hundred rupees. Over time, however, the subsidy amount was gradually reduced, with reports stating that it currently stands at around Rs. 24.50 per cylinder for many users.

As part of the subsidy reform measures, the government had also made Aadhaar linking mandatory for LPG gas connections to ensure direct transfer of benefits to eligible consumers.

The latest development is expected to impact higher-income households if the proposed income-based subsidy restrictions are officially implemented nationwide.
