Tamilaga Vazhvurimai Party Exits DMK Alliance Ahead of Elections
Tamilaga Vazhvurimai Party founder Velmurugan announces exit from the DMK alliance citing dissatisfaction over seat allocation and unmet policy demands.
The Tamilaga Vazhvurimai Party has officially withdrawn from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led alliance, as announced by its founder T. Velmurugan.
Velmurugan, who won the 2021 Assembly election from Panruti constituency under the DMK’s Rising Sun symbol, had demanded at least two seats and a separate party symbol for the upcoming elections. However, the DMK reportedly agreed to allocate only one seat, leading to growing dissatisfaction within the party.
In addition to seat-sharing concerns, Velmurugan had placed 10 key policy demands before the DMK. These included 10.5% internal reservation for the Vanniyar community, priority for Tamil residents in state government jobs, and conducting a caste-based census. He insisted that these demands be included in the DMK’s election manifesto or be assured by the leadership.
Addressing the media, Velmurugan stated that none of the party’s demands were considered by the state government. He expressed frustration over what he described as a lack of response both inside and outside the Assembly, adding that governance in Tamil Nadu continues to be driven by officials rather than elected representatives.
He also confirmed that the party would not join any alliance involving the Bharatiya Janata Party. Instead, the Tamilaga Vazhvurimai Party will explore alliances with parties willing to accept its policy demands. A final decision on future alliances is expected to be announced soon.
