ENGLAND INNINGS

PS – PRINCESS SOPHIA
The sweet 16th match in the 10th Womens T20 World Cup was an all Great Britain battle with England and Scotland locking horns. England were without skipper Nat Sciver Brunt who was recovering from injury. Charlie Dean was the skipper of the match. Scotland were without two star performers of previous match Rachel Slater and Alisa Lister. Scotland won the toss and put England to bat. Amy and Danni joined the crease while Kirstie (who has previously played for England) opened the bowling for Scotland. That made for a nice picture and Kirstie made it even better as she got Amy Jones out caught well by Megan Mccoll. Sophia Dunkley came in first down and Kirstie created a good impression with ENG score at 1/1 after 1. Gabriealla Fontella came in from the other end and bowled well just giving 4 runs. Skipper Kathyrn Bryce brought herself in and Sophia survived a tough catch that eluded Priyanaz at short fine leg. Sophia brought the first boundary for England when she heaved one with confidence on the last ball of the 3rd over that hit the toblerone for a sixer. Even with that six, ENG were 14/1 after half the powerplay and it was more of Scottish powerplay than English powerplay. Sophia got into her elements in the 4th over with 3 fours – a hoist over cover, a heave over mid wicket and a flick fine of short fine leg. She kept strike and effortlessly lifted Kathyrn’s first delivery over midwicket for a boundary. Katherine Fraser replaced Katheryn Bryce but Sophia ensured another over with 3 fours. She drove the 1st ball for four, drilled the 5th between cover and mid off and delicately pushed the last ball over beating the short third. ENG finished the power play strongly at 51/1. Sophia had raced to a 25 ball 43 and ensured ENG went into the middle overs with an advantage.

AMONG THE RUNS
Kirstie was brought back after power play and she repeated history by taking wicket of the first ball. Danni miscued one on the leg side and Kathyrn did well to take a running catch. Alice Capsey joined Sophia. Sophia had the blessings of lady luck as Katherine Fraser spilled a running catch in the 4th ball and Megan Mccoll dropped one in the very next ball. Hannah Rainey bowled the 8th over and conceded 8 runs including a four that was gifted to Alice courtesy a poor fielding effort by Priyanaz. Priyanaz was bestowed the 9th over and Sophia finally had her 33 ball 50 in the 2nd ball. In the 3rd ball Alice clobbered a boundary in the leg side and was gifted one more the very next ball when Darcy Carter put up a moderate fielding effort. Alice had two boundaries in the 3rd & 4th ball of 10th over bowled by Katherine as well – a slog sweep and a square cut. Sophia joined the fun cutting one  beyond point for a boundary. ENG were 91/2 at the half way mark. Sophia and Alice were in great touch. Kathyrn Bryce brought Scotland back into the game when she forced Sophia to slog one and Hannah took a well judged catch very close to the boundary line. Alice began Hannah’s 12th over with a boundary once again helped by the outfielders. That also brought the 100 for ENG and Hannah kept it boundary free for the rest of the over. Kirstie kept it tight in the 13th over. Hannah began the 14th over with a couple of dots and bowled Alice with a beautiful delivery. She pitched it perfectly on length and Alice’s defense was breached and the ball hit the stumps coming in. Despite a last ball boundary by Heather Knight, the over just conceded 5 runs. Katherine Fraser returned for the 15th over and once again conceded three boundaries – Freya pulled the first ball in gap between long on and deep extra cover. Heather swept the 3rd & 6th balls for boundaries. Heather scored another boundary in Hannah’s 16th over and ENG were 137/4 with the death overs to go. Alice first and Heather later took the lead and helped ENG amass 86 runs in the 10 overs after power play. ENG looked good for 180-190 from here on, unless Scotland bowlers come back strongly.

FEARSOME FREYA, DEADLY DANI
Priyanaz bowled an excellent 17th over giving away just 4 runs and taking the wicket of Heather Knight who scooped her straight to Kirstie at short fine leg. Freya Kemp took Kathyrn Bryce for some special treatment in the 18th over. She stepped down and sent the 2nd ball straight to the stands. She caned the 5th ball, (a slow full toss) for a boundary. She slog swept fine and far and got her 2nd sixer of the over in the 6th ball. A total of 20 runs came from the 18th over. Kirstie Gordon came in for the 19th over. Dani Gibson cut her 1st ball, drove her 2nd ball (another poor fielding in deep) and danced down to clobber the 3rd ball over long on for a sixer. Freya came to the party in the 5th ball hammering one to the cow corner for  a boundary. Kirstie outdid her skipper and conceded 21 in the 19th over. Priyanaz came in to close the innings and was welcomed by Dani with a boundary. Frya twirled the 3rd ball over leg side for another boundary. Dani closed the innings with a boundary each of the 5th ball and the 6th ball. The last over cost SCO 18 runs and ENG closed their innings exactly at 200/5. Freya & Dani performed finishing of the highest order scoring 59 of the last 3 overs. ENG scored their 3rd 200+ total in T20 WC. It was the 4th 200+total in this T20 WC. ENG at 200 in 20 with a RR of exactly 10 paid a befitting tribute to 10th T20 World Cup. Nonetheless the Freya – Dani mayhem came out of the syllabus and seemingly shook Scotland out of the game.

SCOTLAND INNINGS

MAKING A MATCH OUT OF IT
Katherine Fraser and Darcey Carter opened the Scottish batting as Lauren Bell opened the English bowling. Darcey took a single first ball and Lauren held Katherine to three dots. Katherine tried to break free and gave Dani an easy catch at mid off. To everyone’ surprise, Dani not only dropped the catch but let it go to the boundary. I wasn’t sure if English fielders were trying to catch up with their Scottish counterparts. Katherine celebrated the next ball when she heaved Lauren next ball over long on for a sixer. If ENG began at 1/1 in 1, SCO began at 11/0 in 1. Linsey smith came from the other end. Darcey effortlessly found two boundaries on the off side in the 2nd and 3rd balls. Katherine Fraser heaved another one over long on in the last ball for the second sixer of the innings. Lauren Bell continued and just conceded 2 in her first 5 balls before Darcey hoisted one straight over Lauren’s head to find a boundary in the over. SCO looked positive in their chase with score at 32/0 after 3 overs. Skipper Charlie Dean replaced Linsey Smith and conceded a boundary in the 2nd ball to Katherine. Charlie had her revenge when she fired one quicker and Katherine missed the timing of the heave only to find her stumps shattered. And as I like to type, Kathyrn replaced Katherine. Linsey Smith switched ends and bowled better this time conceding only 8 runs which included a Darcey drive that raced away to the boundary. Charlie Dean closed the power play and conceded just 5 runs. SCO finished power play at 52/1, one run higher than England. They were matching the English innings and also looked to make a match out of it. Their immediate challenge would be to sustain the momentum in the middle overs.

ENGLAND ON TOP
Sophie Ecclestone was bestowed the 7th over and she clean bowled Kathyrn in her 3rd ball to claim her 150th T20I wicket. As I like to type, sister Sarah stepped in after Kathyrn and she saw the over off with just 3 runs. Dani Gibson bowled the 8th over and added the pressure without conceding a boundary or an extra. She had a tougher catching chance in the last ball of her over as Darcey carted one straight past the bowler. Dani raised her hand and the ball hit her so fast that she couldn’t hold. Sophie continued from the other end and this time and clean bowled Darcey this time. Freya Kemp replaced Dani Gibson from the other end and despite Megan Mccoll pulling her first ball for a boundary conceded just 8 runs. SCO lost tempo and were 73/3 after 10 overs and were losing out in comparison (ENG were 91/2 then). They had more than an uphill task but Sarah began in the right earnest creaming skipper Charlie for 3 boundaries in the 11th over that fetched SCO 15 runs. Megan began the next over bowled by Dani with a lucky boundary of top edge. But she edged the very next ball straight to deep square leg as Freya took an easy catch. There was no stopping the Dani-Freya combo in this match. Priyanaz joined Sarah and the next 7 balls cut across 2 overs yielded just singles. After bringing up the SCO team 100, Sarah made room and pulled one over deep point for a lovely sixer. Linsey Smith was given the 14th over and she accounted for Sarah. In the 4th ball, Sarah miscued a pull and Dani Gibson at deep mid wicket made amends with a well judged catch this time. Freya Kemp induced the leading edge from Priyanaz in the next over and completed a simple caught and bowled. Sophie bowled a quick economical over even as Kirstie Gordon and Pippa Scroll were finding their feet. At end of 16 overs, SCO were 121/6. In the 10 middle overs they could just score 69 and lost 5 wickets. England were on the top of the game.

BRAVE, BUT GRAVE
Charlie came to complete her quota in the 17th and Kirstie and Pippa scored a boundary each signaling that they were not going down easily. Kirstie got one more boundary of Linsey in the 18th over. 20 from 2 overs was good but a far cry from the herculean target. Pippa and Kirstie found a boundary each again in the 19th over bowled by Sophie that fetched 12 for SCO. Lauren closed the formalities in the 20th over which had a boundary, a wide and ended in a run out. SCO finished at 162/7 falling 38 runs short. In context, the 59 runs scored by Freya & Dani was the major difference. England won their third on trot while Scotland embrace a hattrick of losses. But Scotland deserved applause for their fighting spirit. They would only get better with time.
