Southwest Monsoon Likely to Begin Today in Tamil Nadu Region, Says Weather Department

The Chennai Meteorological Department has announced that the southwest monsoon is likely to commence today over parts of the region.

After intense summer heat across Tamil Nadu over the past few weeks, rainfall has been reported in several districts of the state. Meteorologists had earlier predicted that this year’s southwest monsoon would arrive earlier than usual.

According to the latest weather update, conditions are becoming favorable for the onset of the southwest monsoon over parts of the south Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands within the next few hours.

The weather department stated that the monsoon is expected to arrive nearly six days earlier than its normal onset period this year.

For today (May 16), moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is likely in the Western Ghats districts, coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal regions.

Other parts of Tamil Nadu are also expected to receive light rainfall.

The department has further forecast heavy rainfall with thunderstorms at isolated places in Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Theni districts, as well as in Puducherry.

Authorities have advised the public to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity and follow weather advisories issued by local officials.
