Amid continuing tensions between Iran, the United States and Israel, women in Iran are taking part in basic military and civilian defence training in Tehran, as authorities prepare the public for the possibility of a ground conflict.
A public military training centre established at Imam Hussein Square in Tehran has seen women participate in training sessions conducted by military personnel and instructors. The sessions include basic weapons handling and firearm training.
A day earlier, another public military training centre was opened at Haft-e Tir Square in Tehran. The initiative is aimed at preparing civilians to respond to a potential ground attack and contribute to the defence of the country if the situation escalates.
Some women participating in the training said that learning basic skills to protect themselves, their families and people in their neighbourhoods during a conflict could help reduce their fears and increase their preparedness.
The programme is being viewed as part of Iran's “Janfada” volunteer national defence movement, which seeks to provide civilians with basic military and emergency-response skills while preparing volunteers for more advanced training if required.
The development comes as concerns remain over the possibility of renewed escalation involving Iran, the United States and Israel. The participation of women and other civilians in organised preparedness activities has attracted international attention.
The training reflects Iran's broader effort to increase civilian preparedness and national defence capabilities amid continuing regional tensions.
