India is taking a major step forward in nuclear energy with the development of advanced breeder reactor technology, designed to produce more fuel than it consumes.

Unlike conventional reactors, breeder reactors generate additional fuel during operation by converting non-fissile materials like uranium-238 and thorium into usable nuclear fuel such as plutonium-239 and uranium-233. This makes them highly efficient and sustainable for long-term energy production.

India is among a few countries globally working on this next-generation technology. The country’s key project, the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor, is located in Kalpakkam and has a capacity of 500 megawatts.

This reactor uses fast neutrons and liquid sodium as a coolant, allowing efficient fuel conversion and higher power output. It is a crucial component of India’s three-stage nuclear power programme.

Experts highlight that breeder reactor technology is especially important for India due to its limited uranium reserves and abundant thorium resources. By leveraging this technology, India can reduce dependence on imported fuel and enhance energy independence.

However, the system comes with challenges such as high costs, complex operations, and safety concerns. Despite these, breeder reactors are seen as a breakthrough in achieving sustainable, low-carbon energy.
