Coimbatore Emerges as Tamil Nadu’s Second Largest Car Market with Over 33,000 New Registrations

Tamil Nadu's automobile sector witnessed strong growth during the 2025-26 financial year, with more than 2.99 lakh new cars registered across the state, reflecting sustained consumer demand and robust economic activity.

While Chennai retained its position as the state's largest automobile market, Coimbatore emerged as the second-largest car market in Tamil Nadu, recording an impressive 33,234 new car registrations during the financial year. This represents 11.11% of the state's total new car registrations, highlighting the city's growing importance in the automotive sector.

The data further reveals that the majority of registrations were concentrated within the urban limits of Coimbatore. The city alone accounted for 29,757 new car registrations, underscoring the increasing purchasing power and rising demand for personal mobility among urban consumers.

Coimbatore's strong performance reflects its status as one of Tamil Nadu's leading industrial and commercial hubs. The city's expanding economy, growing middle-class population, and improving infrastructure have contributed significantly to the rise in vehicle ownership.

Industry observers note that increasing disposable incomes, easier access to vehicle financing, and a wider range of automobile options have played a key role in driving car sales across the region. The continued expansion of residential and commercial developments has also fueled demand for personal vehicles.

The latest registration figures reaffirm Coimbatore's position as a major growth center for the automotive industry in Tamil Nadu. With strong economic fundamentals and a rapidly growing urban population, the district is expected to remain one of the state's most important automobile markets in the coming years.

The impressive registration numbers also highlight the broader strength of Tamil Nadu's automobile ecosystem, which continues to be one of the most vibrant and dynamic in India.
