Feature Film on Educator E. Balagurusamy Announced by About Films
About Films has acquired the rights to develop a feature film based on the life and legacy of educator E. Balagurusamy, whose books shaped generations of Indian engineering students.
About Films has officially acquired the rights to develop a feature film inspired by the life and legacy of renowned educator E. Balagurusamy, whose books played a major role in shaping engineering and programming education across India.
Currently in development, the film aims to present the inspiring and emotional journey of one of India’s most influential academic figures — a teacher whose work reached millions of students during a transformative phase in the country’s growth.
The makers stated that the project will highlight how Prof. Balagurusamy believed education and technology could empower ordinary families at a time when unemployment and limited opportunities defined middle-class aspirations in India.
Long before coding became mainstream, his books became a common sight in classrooms, engineering colleges, libraries, and student hostels across the country. His teaching materials helped countless students begin careers in engineering and software development.
Many of those students later became part of India’s technology revolution, contributing to the growth of the country’s IT industry, which today employs millions and plays a major role in the Indian economy.
Producer Abhishek Dhandharia said the film is not just about coding or education, but about the dreams of millions of Indian families who believed education could transform their children’s future.
“This is the story of millions of Indian families who believed education could change their children’s future. Prof. Balagurusamy became part of that journey for an entire generation,” he said.
The makers emphasized that the project is being developed as a large-scale cinematic experience focused on emotion, aspiration, and India’s social transformation rather than as a conventional educational biopic.
The screenplay is being written by Sameer Mishra, creator and writer of “Physics Wallah” and writer of “Criminal Justice: A Family Matter.”
Interestingly, both producer Abhishek Dhandharia and writer Sameer Mishra come from premier engineering institutions, IIT Kanpur and IIT Bombay respectively, giving them a personal connection to India’s engineering culture and middle-class ambitions.
The film is currently in the research and screenplay development stage, with discussions ongoing regarding casting, direction, and production planning.
Further announcements related to the film’s title, cast, director, and release timeline are expected in the coming months.
