Southwest Monsoon Likely to Begin Over Andaman Region by May 16, Says Chennai Weather Department

The Chennai Meteorological Department has announced that the southwest monsoon is likely to begin over parts of the south Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands around May 16.

In an official weather bulletin, the department stated that the southwest monsoon is expected to advance gradually into these regions during the coming days.

Meanwhile, the low-pressure area that persisted over the southwest Bay of Bengal on May 12 has moved northward and intensified into a deep depression over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal on Tuesday (May 13).

Due to the influence of this weather system, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds with speeds of 30 to 40 kmph is likely at isolated places in the Western Ghats districts, coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal today.

Other parts of Tamil Nadu are also expected to receive light rainfall.

For Wednesday (May 14), the weather department has forecast light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms at isolated places in the Western Ghats districts, delta districts, and Karaikal region.

Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds is likely at isolated places in the Nilgiris district.

On May 15, light to moderate rainfall is expected in the south coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, Western Ghats districts, and adjoining regions.

The remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are also likely to experience light rain.

Additionally, heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected at isolated places in the hilly regions of Coimbatore district and the Nilgiris, according to the weather department.
