Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay has announced that legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja will be accorded full state honours in recognition of his immense contribution to Tamil cinema and Indian filmmaking.

Bharathiraja, widely celebrated as "Iyakkunar Imayam" (Director Extraordinaire), passed away in the early hours of June 10, 2026, at his residence in Neelankarai, Chennai. The veteran filmmaker had been undergoing treatment at home in recent months due to age-related health issues.

Following the news of his demise, a large number of film personalities, political leaders, and fans gathered at his residence to pay their final respects. Chief Minister Vijay personally visited Bharathiraja's home and paid homage by placing a floral wreath.

Several prominent personalities from the film and political spheres also paid tribute, including Seeman, Vairamuthu, Gangai Amaran, Suhasini, and Suriya. Many other celebrities and admirers continue to visit and offer their condolences.

In a heartfelt message, Chief Minister Vijay expressed deep sorrow over Bharathiraja's passing and praised his unparalleled contribution to Tamil cinema.
