Flood Situation Worsens in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar Amid Rising River Levels
The flood situation is intensifying in several parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as heavy rainfall continues across North India. Water levels in the Ganga and other major rivers have been rising steadily, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.
In Bihar, the Ganga River at Gandhi Ghat in Patna has crossed its highest recorded flood level. Officials said the water level rose by 10 centimetres within just four hours, raising concerns about further flooding in low-lying areas.
The Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Burhi Gandak and Punpun rivers are flowing above danger levels at several locations. With the flood situation worsening, large-scale rescue and relief operations have been launched across the affected areas.
Six National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and 27 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed for rescue and relief operations. Around 700 boats are also being used to assist people in flood-affected areas and support evacuation efforts.
In Uttar Pradesh, 26 districts have been affected by flooding, with around 3.53 lakh people impacted. Authorities have evacuated 17,544 people to safer locations as water levels continue to rise in several areas.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall in Bihar from September 5 to September 8. Further rainfall during this period could cause river levels to rise even more and worsen the flood situation.
Authorities are continuing to closely monitor river levels and weather conditions while carrying out rescue, evacuation and relief operations in the affected areas.
