2026 El Niño Impact on Tamil Nadu: How Could It Affect Rainfall?
Chennai: El Niño conditions that developed in 2026 are reportedly showing signs of strengthening. According to the information provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the El Niño condition was weak in June and strengthened to a moderate level in July. It could strengthen further between October and December and potentially reach a very strong level.
El Niño is considered one of the important climate factors that can influence India's Southwest Monsoon. For 2026, the IMD had earlier forecast that the Southwest Monsoon rainfall across India could be around 90 percent of the long-period average.
What Could Be the Impact on Tamil Nadu?
For Tamil Nadu, the impact of El Niño is particularly important during the Northeast Monsoon season, which generally extends from October to December. As El Niño strengthens, changes in rainfall patterns and weather systems could occur, according to weather experts.
However, it cannot be directly concluded that Tamil Nadu will receive less rainfall simply because of El Niño. Tamil Nadu has recorded significant rainfall during some previous El Niño years as well.
Therefore, El Niño alone will not determine how much rainfall Tamil Nadu receives in 2026. Several other factors, including sea surface temperatures, conditions over the Indian Ocean, low-pressure areas and cyclonic systems, can also influence the state's rainfall.
Monitoring Heavy Rainfall and Flood Risk
During the Northeast Monsoon, low-pressure areas and cyclonic systems developing over the Bay of Bengal can bring heavy rainfall to coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. As a result, preparedness and continuous monitoring will be important during the monsoon season.
Coastal districts, particularly areas including Chennai, may need to remain prepared for episodes of heavy rainfall and the possibility of flooding depending on the development and movement of weather systems.
Importantly, 2026 has not been officially classified as a “Super El Niño year” by the IMD or the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The intensity of El Niño and its potential impact on Tamil Nadu continue to be monitored.
A clearer picture of Tamil Nadu's rainfall situation will emerge through subsequent official weather forecasts and updates as the Northeast Monsoon approaches and progresses.
