The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in four districts of Tamil Nadu on June 9, with thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds expected in several parts of the state.

According to the weather department, an atmospheric trough extending from coastal Karnataka to coastal Andhra Pradesh at an altitude of 3.1 km to 4.5 km is influencing weather conditions across southern India.

Heavy Rain Alert for Today

On June 9, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is likely at isolated places across Tamil Nadu, as well as in Puducherry and Karaikal.

Heavy rain, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40 to 50 kmph, is expected in:

  • Nilgiris
  • Coimbatore
  • Kanyakumari
  • Hilly regions of Tirunelveli district

Rain Forecast for June 10

Moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is likely in:

  • Vellore
  • Ranipet
  • Tiruvallur
  • Kanchipuram
  • Chennai
  • Chengalpattu

Heavy rainfall is also expected in:

  • Hilly regions of Tirunelveli
  • Theni
  • Kanyakumari

Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds is likely in:

  • Hilly regions of Tirunelveli
  • Kanyakumari district

Rain Forecast for June 12

Heavy rainfall is expected in:

  • Hilly regions of Coimbatore
  • Nilgiris
  • Vellore
  • Tirupattur
  • Krishnagiri
  • Dharmapuri
  • Erode
  • Salem

These areas may experience thunderstorms and wind speeds of 40–50 kmph.

Temperature Outlook

The weather department has indicated that maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal could rise by up to 2°C today, leading to warmer daytime conditions in several districts.

Fishermen Warning

A special advisory has been issued for fishermen. From June 9 to June 10, strong winds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, are expected over:

  • Tamil Nadu coastal areas
  • Gulf of Mannar
  • Comorin Sea (Kanyakumari region)

Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the sea during this period due to rough weather and potentially hazardous marine conditions.
