Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Writes to PM Modi Seeking Uninterrupted Fertilizer Supply for Farmers

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting uninterrupted fertilizer supply to the state in order to support farmers ahead of the upcoming Kharif cultivation season.

In his letter, the Chief Minister stated that more than 40 percent of Tamil Nadu’s population depends on agriculture for their livelihood. He noted that the state has around 48.27 lakh hectares under net cultivation and approximately 62.25 lakh hectares under gross cultivation.

The Chief Minister also highlighted that nearly 92 percent of farmers in Tamil Nadu belong to the small and marginal farmer category. Despite having only 3 percent of India’s total water resources, Tamil Nadu cultivates a wide variety of crops including paddy, millets, oilseeds, cotton, sugarcane, vegetables, flowers, fruits, medicinal plants, aromatic crops, spices, and horticultural crops.

Vijay mentioned that since assuming office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10, 2026, he has been reviewing the functioning of various government departments. During his review of the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department, it was identified that the state had not received the full quantity of fertilizers allocated for April and May 2026.

According to the letter, Tamil Nadu did not receive 39,001 metric tonnes of urea, 28,607 metric tonnes of DAP fertilizer, and 24,235 metric tonnes of potash from fertilizer manufacturers. Detailed information regarding the shortages was also reportedly attached to the communication sent to the Prime Minister.

The Chief Minister warned that due to widespread rainfall across various regions of the state, farmers are showing strong interest in expanding crop cultivation during the Kharif season, which is expected to significantly increase the demand for fertilizers such as urea and DAP.

He further stated that any fertilizer shortage at this stage could pose a serious threat to the state’s food security.

Citing favourable agricultural conditions and increased cultivation activities, Vijay said the demand for fertilizers is likely to rise substantially in the coming weeks. He urged the Central Government to immediately ensure the supply of 3.83 lakh metric tonnes of urea, 1.05 lakh metric tonnes of DAP, and 0.83 lakh metric tonnes of potash to Tamil Nadu.

The Chief Minister requested Prime Minister Modi to instruct the concerned officials to ensure timely and uninterrupted delivery of fertilizers to support farmers across the state.
