Tamil Nadu recorded a historic voter turnout of 84.51% in the Assembly elections held on Thursday, marking the highest participation in the state’s 74-year electoral history. The election was conducted across all 234 constituencies in a single phase, with over 4,000 candidates in the fray, making it a highly competitive four-cornered contest involving major political parties and alliances.

The polling was carried out at more than 75,000 booths across the state under tight security arrangements, with thousands of police personnel and central armed forces deployed to ensure smooth conduct. Voting began at 7 a.m., and people turned out in large numbers despite the heat, leading to a steady increase in polling percentages throughout the day.

The election witnessed a contest involving parties such as the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam alliance, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam alliance, Naam Tamilar Katchi led by Seeman, and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam led by Vijay.

Polling percentages rose steadily from 17.69% in the morning to over 82% by evening, eventually reaching around 85% after allowing voters in queues to cast their votes. Minor incidents were reported in a few places, but overall polling remained peaceful.

The votes have been sealed and transported securely to 62 counting centers across the state, with counting scheduled for May 4. Among districts, Karur recorded the highest turnout at 92.66%, followed by Dharmapuri and Erode. In Chennai, the overall turnout stood at around 84%, with key constituencies also witnessing strong participation.

Prominent leaders including M. K. Stalin, Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Seeman, and Vijay cast their votes, along with several film personalities such as Rajinikanth, Ajith Kumar, Vikram, Sivakarthikeyan, Trisha, and Simran.

The high turnout is attributed to voter list revisions that removed ineligible entries and added millions of new voters, including first-time participants. Political observers noted that increased awareness and enthusiasm among young voters significantly contributed to this record-breaking participation.
