Tamil Nadu School Reopening May Be Delayed Due to Continuing Heatwave

Schools in Tamil Nadu, which were earlier scheduled to reopen on June 1 after the summer vacation, may now face a delay due to the continuing impact of extreme summer heat across the state.

The newly formed TVK government had already confirmed June 1 as the reopening date for schools. School Education Minister Rajmohan had also announced that classes for students from Classes 1 to 3 would begin on June 4.

However, temperatures remain high across several regions, with heatwave conditions continuing in many places.

Considering the welfare and safety of students, teachers’ associations and several political leaders have urged the government to postpone the reopening of schools by at least one week.

Amid these concerns, Minister Rajmohan recently stated that details had been sought from the Meteorological Department regarding possible heatwave conditions during the first week of June and the expected intensity of summer temperatures.

According to reports, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay chaired a consultation meeting today with Minister Rajmohan and senior School Education Department officials to review the weather situation and discuss reopening plans.

Based on the weather department’s assessment, schools may reportedly reopen only during the second week of June if heatwave conditions continue.

An official announcement regarding the final reopening schedule is expected to be released by the School Education Department later today.
