India made a dream start to the three-match ODI series by defeating England by six wickets in the opening match at Edgbaston, Birmingham, taking a 1-0 lead in the series. The victory was historic as it ended England's remarkable 12-year unbeaten record in One Day Internationals at Edgbaston. England's last ODI defeat at the venue had come on September 2, 2014, coincidentally against India.

After winning the toss, England chose to bat first and were bowled out for 258. Joe Root remained unbeaten with a well-crafted 76, while Liam Dawson contributed a valuable 68. However, India's bowlers staged an impressive comeback, with Axar Patel delivering a match-winning spell of four wickets to restrict the hosts to a below-par total.

In reply, India comfortably chased down the target of 259, reaching 262/4 in 45.2 overs with 28 balls to spare. Captain Shubman Gill played a superb innings of 80 before retiring hurt due to cramps after laying a solid foundation for the chase.

Axar Patel continued his outstanding performance with the bat, remaining unbeaten on 57, while Washington Sundar scored an unbeaten 52. The duo shared a match-winning century partnership that guided India to a convincing victory and ensured there were no late setbacks.

Axar Patel's exceptional all-round display with both bat and ball earned him the Player of the Match award. The comprehensive win not only gave India a valuable 1-0 advantage in the ODI series but also ended England's 12-year unbeaten streak at Edgbaston, making it one of India's most memorable ODI victories in England.
