Water Released from Vaigai Dam for Kallazhagar Festival in Madurai

Water has been released from the Vaigai Dam in preparation for the grand Kallazhagar festival, a key event of the famous Chithirai Festival in Madurai.

Authorities have ordered the release of water at a rate of 500 cubic feet per second for six days starting April 24, ensuring adequate flow in the Vaigai River for the upcoming religious celebrations.

The Chithirai Festival, one of the most significant annual events associated with the Meenakshi Amman Temple, attracts lakhs of devotees from across Tamil Nadu and beyond. Major highlights of the festival include the celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and the ceremonial entry of Lord Kallazhagar into the Vaigai River.

As part of the celebrations, the “Ethir Sevai” event is scheduled to take place on April 30, followed by the main ritual of Kallazhagar entering the river on May 1, which is expected to draw massive crowds.

Meanwhile, authorities have issued a flood alert for residents in Theni and Madurai districts due to the controlled release of water from the dam.
