Heavy Rain Likely in Several Tamil Nadu Districts, Chennai Weather to Remain Cloudy
The Chennai Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain with thunderstorms in several Tamil Nadu districts between May 20 and May 23. Chennai may also receive moderate rainfall.
The Chennai Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert predicting heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds across several districts of Tamil Nadu over the next few days.
According to the weather department, a trough extending from the southeast Arabian Sea to the central Bay of Bengal is currently passing through Lakshadweep, north Kerala, south interior Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh at an altitude of around 3.1 km to 4.5 km above sea level.
Rain Forecast for Tamil Nadu
On May 20 and 21, heavy rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds ranging from 40 to 50 kmph is likely at isolated places in the hilly regions of Coimbatore district, Nilgiris, Theni, Erode, and Dindigul districts. Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is also expected at isolated places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
On May 22, heavy rain is likely in Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Tirupathur, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Erode, and Nilgiris districts. Several places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal may also experience light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and strong winds.
On May 23, light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds is expected at a few places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
Temperature Forecast
The weather department stated that there is little chance of significant change in maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal between May 20 and May 24. However, temperatures may rise slightly in isolated areas of north coastal Tamil Nadu.
Maximum temperatures are expected to remain close to normal levels across Tamil Nadu and Karaikal during this period.
Officials also warned that due to high temperatures and humidity levels, discomfort may be experienced in some parts of north coastal Tamil Nadu from May 20 to May 23.
Chennai Weather Forecast
For Chennai and its suburban areas, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy today and tomorrow. Some areas of the city may receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
The maximum temperature in Chennai is expected to hover around 39 to 40 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is likely to remain around 29 degrees Celsius.
