A large portion of the nearly 100-year-old Saithi Durga Temple in Raghopur area of Naugachhia, Bhagalpur district, Bihar, has been swept into the Ganga River following severe riverbank erosion.
The erosion intensified near the Raghopur Zamindari embankment as the flow of the Ganga became stronger. Despite efforts to protect the temple, the fast-moving river current caused a significant portion of the structure to collapse and become submerged in the river.
The erosion has also raised concerns about nearby infrastructure, including a railway track, a major ghat and thousands of homes in the surrounding areas.
Local residents and authorities have intensified efforts to control the riverbank erosion and protect vulnerable areas.
Bhagalpur District Magistrate Alankrita Pandey inspected the affected site and advised residents to remain alert as precautionary measures continue.
The incident highlights the growing threat posed by severe riverbank erosion along the Ganga and the risk it poses to historic structures and nearby communities.
