TVK MLA V. Sathyabama sat in the Speaker’s chair and presided over the proceedings of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in the absence of both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

According to reports, this makes V. Sathyabama the first woman in the history of the Tamil Nadu Assembly to sit in the Speaker’s chair and preside over the House proceedings. Assembly members reportedly congratulated her on the occasion.

V. Sathyabama is the TVK MLA representing the Tiruppur North constituency. She is also a member of the Panel of Chairpersons headed by the Speaker. When the Speaker and Deputy Speaker are absent, members of this panel can preside over the proceedings of the House.

Importantly, this was not an official appointment as the Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Assembly. It was an occasion where V. Sathyabama presided over the House proceedings from the Speaker’s chair in accordance with the panel arrangement.
