Onions at ₹35 per Kg in Ration Shops! – Sale Begins Across Urban Tamil Nadu from September 3
Tamil Nadu will sell onions at ₹35 per kg through urban ration shops and cooperative outlets from September 3 to provide relief from rising market prices.

The Tamil Nadu government has made arrangements to sell onions at a subsidized price through ration shops, as onion prices in the open market have increased. The initiative aims to provide relief to the public from the rising cost of onions.
From September 3, onions will be sold at ₹35 per kg through urban fair price shops and cooperative sales outlets, according to an announcement made by Food and Consumer Protection Minister Venkataraman in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
As a first step, the government has procured 1,000 metric tonnes of onions. The onions will be distributed through 8,739 fair price shops in urban areas, benefiting around 80 lakh ration card holders.
Each eligible ration card will be provided with 1 kg of onions at ₹35. The minister stated that reduced onion arrivals and increased transportation costs are among the factors contributing to the rise in prices in the open market.
The government’s decision is expected to provide consumers with access to onions at a lower price amid the ongoing increase in market prices.
