Royal Challengers Bengaluru Become First Team to Qualify for IPL Playoffs After Victory Over Punjab Kings
Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated Punjab Kings by 23 runs in the IPL to become the first team to qualify for the playoffs. Virat Kohli and Venkatesh Iyer starred with brilliant half-centuries.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) became the first team to qualify for the IPL playoffs after securing a convincing 23-run victory over Punjab Kings in the match held at Dharamshala.
After winning the toss, Punjab Kings opted to bowl first, allowing RCB to set a massive target. Batting first, Royal Challengers Bengaluru posted an impressive total of 222 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
RCB’s innings was powered by brilliant half-centuries from Venkatesh Iyer and Virat Kohli. Venkatesh Iyer played a sensational knock of 73 runs off just 40 balls, smashing 8 boundaries and 4 sixes while remaining unbeaten till the end. Virat Kohli also delivered an attacking performance, scoring 58 runs from 37 deliveries, including 4 fours and 3 sixes.
Devdutt Padikkal added valuable support with 45 runs off 25 balls, while Tim David provided a late flourish by scoring 28 runs from only 12 balls with the help of 2 boundaries and 2 sixes.
For Punjab Kings, Harpreet Brar picked up two wickets, while Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal claimed one wicket each.
Chasing a challenging target of 223 runs, Punjab Kings managed to score only 199 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs. Shashank Singh was the top scorer for Punjab Kings with a fighting 56 off 27 balls, which included 4 boundaries and 4 sixes. Cooper Connolly and Marcus Stoinis contributed 37 runs each, while Suryansh Shedge scored 35 runs.
RCB bowlers delivered an effective performance, with Rasikh Salam Dar taking 3 wickets and Bhuvneshwar Kumar picking up 2 wickets. Josh Hazlewood, Suyash Sharma, and Romario Shepherd took one wicket each.
With this victory against Punjab Kings, RCB have now registered 9 wins from 13 matches and officially became the first team to secure a spot in the IPL playoffs.
