Ukraine Launches Massive Drone Attack on St. Petersburg; Russia Issues Public Warning

Russia has issued a public warning urging residents of St. Petersburg, the country's second-largest city, to remain indoors following a large-scale drone attack allegedly launched by Ukraine.

Authorities also cautioned that internet and communication services could face disruptions as security agencies responded to the incident and strengthened defensive measures across the region.

According to Russian officials, air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 141 drones over St. Petersburg, while the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that a total of 376 Ukrainian drones were shot down across the country within a single day.

The latest escalation comes amid ongoing tensions in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has continued for more than four years. Ukraine had recently invited Russia for renewed discussions aimed at addressing the conflict. Reports indicate that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sent a direct letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, reportedly criticizing his long tenure in power and urging fresh dialogue.

However, after reports emerged that Putin had rejected the proposal, Ukraine allegedly intensified its military operations, leading to the latest wave of drone attacks.

The strike on Saint Petersburg is considered significant because the city has largely remained removed from the day-to-day impact of the conflict compared with regions closer to the front lines. Analysts suggest the attack could increase domestic pressure on the Russian government by bringing the effects of the war closer to major population centers.

No official information regarding casualties or injuries resulting from the attacks has been released so far.

The incident occurred just hours before the opening of Russia's annual international investment event, the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, a major gathering attended by business leaders and investors from around the world. Ukrainian strikes reportedly targeted an oil terminal and a shipyard in the city before the larger drone offensive unfolded.

Meanwhile, Ukraine stated that its air defense systems intercepted 249 out of 272 Russian drones launched against Ukrainian territory in a separate wave of attacks.

The latest developments highlight the continued escalation of drone warfare between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides increasingly relying on unmanned aerial systems to target strategic infrastructure and military assets far beyond traditional battle zones.
