Renowned Tamil scholar, Pattimandram moderator and speaker Solomon Pappaiah passed away at the age of 90 in Madurai on September 11, 2026, following age-related ailments. His death marks the loss of one of Tamil Nadu’s most respected public speakers and cultural personalities.
Solomon Pappaiah was widely known for his engaging and humorous speaking style, simple use of Tamil and distinctive approach to moderating Pattimandram debates. He played a significant role in taking Tamil literary discussions and social themes to a wider audience through his decades-long involvement in public debate programmes.
He served as a professor and later headed the Tamil department at The American College in Madurai. His contributions to Tamil language and culture earned him several honours, including the Kalaimamani award from the Tamil Nadu government and the Padma Shri, which he received in 2021.
His passing has brought widespread grief among Tamil literary circles, Pattimandram participants, artists and admirers across Tamil Nadu. Solomon Pappaiah's distinctive voice and contribution to Tamil public discourse will remain an important part of the state's cultural history.
