Tamil-Origin Nithya Raman Advances to Second Place in Los Angeles Mayor Primary Race
Tamil-origin politician Nithya Raman has moved into second place in the Los Angeles mayoral primary election race, boosting her chances of advancing to the November mayoral election.
Tamil-origin politician Nithya Raman has moved into second place in the primary race for the Los Angeles mayoral election, strengthening her chances of advancing to the final election scheduled for November.
The primary election, held on June 2, is designed to identify the top two candidates who will compete in the Los Angeles mayoral election later this year. Since a large number of voters cast their ballots by mail, vote counting is still ongoing, and final results may take several days to be confirmed.
Current Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass remains the frontrunner with approximately 34.7% of the vote and is widely expected to secure a place in the November election.
The battle for second place has been closely contested between Nithya Raman and television personality Spencer Pratt. According to recent vote counts, Raman has overtaken Pratt and moved into second position.
Reports indicate that Raman has secured around 40% of the counted votes in several areas of Los Angeles County and has established a lead of roughly 3,000 votes over her closest rival.
Who is Nithya Raman?
Born in 1981 to a Tamil family with roots in Kerala, Nithya Raman moved to the United States with her parents when she was six years old.
She studied government at Harvard University and later pursued urban planning studies at the University of Massachusetts.
Before entering politics in the United States, Raman spent time working in Chennai, where she was involved in initiatives focused on sanitation and urban development.
After relocating to Los Angeles in 2013, she founded an organization dedicated to helping homeless individuals find housing and support services. Her work in addressing homelessness and affordable housing issues earned widespread recognition.
In 2020, Raman made history by becoming the first South Asian woman elected to the Los Angeles City Council after defeating a well-funded opponent backed by prominent political figures.
During her tenure on the City Council, she played a significant role in urban planning, affordable housing development, and policies aimed at supporting vulnerable communities.
Strong Chance of Reaching Final Election
As vote counting continues, political observers believe Raman is well-positioned to secure one of the two spots in the November mayoral election.
Her rise in the race has attracted attention among Indian-American and Tamil communities worldwide, with many viewing her campaign as another example of the growing influence of the Indian diaspora in global politics.
If she advances and performs strongly in November, Nithya Raman could achieve another historic milestone in Los Angeles politics and further strengthen South Asian representation in major public offices across the United States.
