Power Generation Halted at Kudankulam Nuclear Plant Unit 1 Due to Technical Fault
Power generation temporarily stopped at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 after a technical fault, impacting Tamil Nadu’s electricity supply.
Power generation has been temporarily halted at the first reactor of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tirunelveli district following a sudden technical fault.
The plant, developed with assistance from Russia, operates two nuclear reactors with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts each. Currently, Tamil Nadu receives around 1,152 megawatts from the facility, and the disruption has resulted in a loss of approximately 576 megawatts of power supply to the state.
Officials stated that the shutdown was caused by a malfunction in the condenser cooling water system. The issue has led to a temporary suspension of electricity generation from the affected unit.
Tamil Nadu’s daily power demand stands at around 19,000 megawatts and is expected to rise to nearly 21,000 megawatts during the summer due to increased usage of electrical appliances. In this context, the outage is being seen as a significant setback for the state’s power supply.
Scientists and technical experts at the plant are currently working on an urgent basis to fix the fault and restore power generation at the earliest.
